ICSA Showcases Diversity and Culture

The Indian Cultural Student Association (ICSA) lit up Charter Hall with color and talent at their spring 2016 ICSA Cultural Show. One of the most popular social events on the St. George’s University calendar, the show’s audience was treated to students’ artistic portrayal of the festivities surrounding an Indian wedding, all under the theme “My Big Phat Indian Wedding.”

The celebration also raised EC $3,000 for two charities: the Bel Air Children’s Home, an orphanage in Grenada, and Sankara Eye Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides free eye surgeries in villages and underserved communities in India.

“Indian weddings are colorful, bright, exciting celebrations that can go on for days, with each day having a different event,” explained ICSA President Aparna Ashok. “We wanted to make the show an amalgamation of the different wedding rituals from different parts of India.”

Even with this central theme, the ICSA show focused on more than just India. Bollywood met hip-hop and fusion on stage as the show’s diverse cast delighted viewers with assorted performances in dance, song, and even magic. A group from the Bel Air Children’s Home collaborated with SGU dance group, Cardiac Arrest, to choreograph and deliver an energetic hip-hop dance. Cardiac Arrest also performed along with a myriad of others.

“We had performers from the many ethnic backgrounds represented at SGU,” said Ms. Ashok. “We encourage and welcome anyone with an interest in dance, performance, and learning about other cultures. We feel if we have the talents and skills, we should be able to share them with the community as a way of giving back.”

In addition to its biannual cultural show, ICSA also hosts Holi—the festival of colors—a Diwali dinner and a cricket tournament involving the Grenadian community. The organization recently represented the University at an Indian Diaspora conference held in Grenada.
