Three Grenadian children’s lives will be forever changed by the efforts of the St. George’s University Chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). With thirty contestants and over five hundred persons in attendance, AMSA raised over $30,000EC at its annual Valentine’s Day Date Auction on Friday, February 15, exceeding their $27,000EC goal.
The auction, held in collaboration with the Grenada Heart Foundation, funds open heart surgeries for children. Through collaboration between Jacksonville Hospital and Patron of the Hearts Charity in Florida, these surgeries will be done for a discounted $5000US per child as opposed to $50,000US.
AMSA vice president of membership and international regional director for the AMSA national board, Robin Camp, stated “It is an amazing feeling knowing we can contribute to the lives and health of these children. This means a lot to them, and we are happy to facilitate the funding of these surgeries that can potentially save lives.”
With forty business sponsors and exquisite raffle prizes including two seven-night stays at a resort in St. Lucia or Antigua, Robin Camp shared how this was by far the biggest auction hosted. “We wanted to take this event to the next level and get the business community involved,” he stated. “The response was overwhelming, we doubled our donation size, and it could not have been the success it was without the involvement of the wider Grenadian community.”
As part of the organization’s philanthropic work, health fairs are conducted throughout Grenada at least twice per term in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. AMSA also collaborates with the School of Veterinary Medicine’s Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) to conduct One Health, One Medicine health fairs where pets are also treated.
The AMSA executive and auction committee: Tyler Alderson, Brian Ahn, Nerissa Baptiste, Deidre Chang, Nichole Jensen, Christine Ju, Hellen Ko, Amish Patel and Elizabeth Paulsen, extends heartfelt thanks to all participants and bidders who made the 2013 Valentine’s Day Date Auction the resounding success it was.
