Inaugural Knowledge Bowl Champs Do it Again; St. Joseph’s Convent, St. George is 2013 Knowledge Bowl Champion

St. George’s – March 26, 2013 – St. Joseph’s Convent, St. George’s (SJC) has captured the SGU Knowledge Bowl championship for the third time in the competition’s 8-year history. The school won the very first Knowledge Bowl trophy in 2006, were victorious again in 2009 and placed second in 2011. At this year’s final match, the team went head to head with the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) at Charter Hall, St. George’s University on March 23, emerging the victor after three rounds of competition. As champion, SJC took home the coveted Knowledge Bowl Challenge trophy, $15,000 cash prize and individual prizes for each team member and coach.

The final match was very intense with SAASS, the second place winner, who was competing in the finals for the first time, performing commendably. Their tenacious fight, especially in the third and final round kept the audience at the edge of their seats. Two semi-finalists, Anglican High School and Beacon High School, must also be commended.

This season of Knowledge Bowl began in January 2013 with eighteen secondary schools, with St. Mark’s Secondary School making its debut appearance. The high profile quiz competition is open to third, fourth and fifth form students from Grenada’s secondary schools and tests students on the CSEC syllabi from a broad range of subjects as well as current affairs. Over the years, many participants have gone on to excel in the CSEC exams as the quiz is an excellent preparatory tool. Students also happily report that it keeps them sharp and focused and trains them in time-management.

Adding to the excitement of the competition this season, was a special “Knock-out Challenge” match introduced for the first time.  It featured competition among all the teams who did not advance past the preliminary round.  Westmorland School, who were in the championship finals for the last 2 years, emerged victorious from among 6 other schools. This school and second runner up, Boca Secondary, both won cash prizes.

Another new feature appearing in Season 8 was the “People’s Points” quiz, an audience participation segment aimed at engaging the viewing audience. During each match a question was posed to the audience who won points for a participating school of their choice by submitting correct answers. SJC St. George’s received the most points and was awarded a special cash prize.

While SGU and Flow are the two primary partners in the production of the competition, the Grenada Co-operative Bank have given continuous corporate support over the past 8 years.  Additional support has been provided by Glenelg, Courts Grenada Ltd, Cathwills Stationary Services, Digicel, Lucozade, Mt. Cinnamon Beach Resort, Spice Island Beach Resort, Petite Anse Hotel and La Sagesse Nature Center. The involvement of these corporate partners has been integral to the success of the SGU Knowledge Bowl and is testimony of their commitment to community development.
